Which sites you choose to submit your articles to depends on exactly what you are looking to gain from them. Below I have listed some websites to help you make money by writing. I have split them into three groups, link builders, ad revenue and other income methods. To successfully make money by writing you probably need to mix all three.

SEO - The Importance of Meta Tags on Your Website

If you want to make money by writing on a website or blog then one important part of SEO (search engine optimization) that you don't want to overlook is Meta Tags. If you are to make any money from your website you need traffic coming to it. One of the best sources of traffic is search engines. I have mentioned the importance of keywords when writing your articles, but all those keywords will be in vain if your website does not have good meta tags.

What are Meta Tags?
Meta tags are simply instructions in your websites html code which tell the search engine robots what your website or blog is called. What it is about. What your keywords are. It also includes instructions to the robots to index your site and to follow your links and to return in a specific time frame.
If you have a website and you are unsure if you have meta tags you can right click on a plain part of a page and then select "view source" from the box. This will bring up the html code. Meta tags will be near the beginning in the head section.
Alternatively you can use many available free webtools. Just google "free meta tag checker" and you will find lots. Always use several though because although many such tools are great, some SEO websites do try to make out your website has problems just to tempt you into buying some software package from them.

How to Create Meta Tags
If you don't have meta tags or your meta tags are inadequate then by far the easiest way of creating them is using a meta tag generator. Again there are lots of free ones available.
Once you have your meta tag html simply copy and paste it to the head section of your websites html code.
Meta tags will look something like this:

After you have finished adding your meta tags use a meta tag checker again to test they work correctly. You should find that after a few days your site will begin to become more visible to search engines and your page rank will improve. You will then get more traffic as a result. Remember more traffic = make money by writing!

Copyright Action Against Article Theft

What can you do to prevent your articles or blog posts from being stolen? And what should you do if someone has breached your copyright? You don't want someone else making money by stealing from you do you? Or worse you don't want to be prevented from making money from your own articles. That happened to me. Visibly copyright your work
It's impossible to prevent plagiarism but you can help discourage it. Make sure you claim copyright on your blog, website or articles. That way no one can claim any doubt. If they know you are serious about copyright they are less likely to steal from you.

Register your work
There are some websites that offer a free registering service, usually in return for advertising space on your web page. But hey the advert works for you as a deterrent to wood be thieves anyway. Basically they are just acting as an independent third party who will confirm the date at which you registered your work with them. This enables you to prove you had your work from that date, so anyone unable to prove ownership of your work at an earlier date than that will lose their case. Check regularly for copyright breaches
Frequently checking the internet for stolen copies of your work will help you keep on top of it and nip it in the bud. A simple way is to copy and paste the first one or two sentences from your article into the google search box. This will bring up any versions of your article to the fore. This was in fact how I found my article on Go Articles - I had forgotten it was on there. Alternatively there are lots of sites out there that will check for you such as copyscape and copygator.

What should you do if you find an illegal copy of your work?
The first thing to do is to send a polite request to the website owner informing them that you are the original author and owner of copyright - with simple proof if you have it, for example a link to your works original siting. Request that they remove your article from their site, or if you prefer that they give you due credit on their site and add a link to your original work.

If this has no effect contact the websites host. Send a DMCA take down notice (US) or EUCD (Europe).

This basically means you need to include certain information in your communication.

1. Your (copyright owner) full name and contact details
2. Details of recipient (who you're writing to)
3. Title of and link to your original work
4. Title of and link to offending work
5. Brief statement including declaration of copyright and that you believe that the copied article breaches your copyright, why you believe this and request for the article to be removed.
6. Sign and date (on paper or electronically doesn't matter)

It's that easy. Hopefully this will resolve any issue you have.

Copyright - My Article has Been Stolen!

If you write a lot online then you are at risk of someone stealing your work. People steal web posts, blog posts, articles, images. Just about anything they think they can use for their own benefit. It is very annoying if others steal your articles to make money from them.

Breach of copyright is illegal, although copyright laws do vary from country to country the basics are the same. Generally, when writing online, as soon as you create and publish an original piece of writing and publish it online, you will automatically own the copyright. That is easy enough but the hard part is proving that you own the copyright when someone steals your article from you.

Certain copying is considered acceptable. Generally if someone re publishes part of your work, crediting you as the source and adding a link to your original article, this is mostly deemed OK. After all links to your site will benefit you in additional traffic as well as improve your SEO. This is, after all, exactly what you are after when writing to make money, right? I had some such external links to some of my articles on Associated Content and they were very beneficial - in fact, so much so that when I had to move my articles from AC to other websites (due to AC ceasing payments to non-US residents) the page views dropped dramatically. So I personally am happy if someone wishes to do that with my work.

What is generally unacceptable though, is when your work is taken, in part or entirety, and republished elsewhere with no mention of the original author or the source. The work is basically passed as their own. Invariably the guilty party is using your work to make money for themselves. This is in breach of copyright laws.

I myself have suffered such an affront. One of my articles was stolen in one of it's forms when sited on AC. It was used on some blog - and not even a good one! This happened back in October 2009 but I was completely unaware of it. It was after leaving AC in May 2010, when I was redistributing my articles that the problem arose.

Shortly after I had originally written the article in August 2009, I had tried to submit it to Ezine. Ezine rejected it because it contained 2 links to this blog. I decided to resubmit it recently so I removed the links and also did a bit of reworking of the article - adding extra bits etc.

Soon after resubmitting it to Ezine they emailed me stating that they had suspended my account and requested that I explain the source of my article. They informed me that my article was a very similar article to one published elsewhere on the internet, attributed to someone else and reminded me that plagiarism was illegal.
Can you believe it?! I was being accused of stealing my own work from the thief who stole it from me! You couldn't make it up, could you?! I was really annoyed. Not least because if Ezine had bothered to look at the posting date of the offending article they would have seen that it was 2 months AFTER the date I had originally submitted the article to them. The trouble was, I had no idea if they would still have access to my article in the originnal form I submitted it to them. So could I prove the article was mine and the other guy the thief? As I had removed the article from AC I couldn't show how long ago I had put it on there. It had been removed too long for it still to be accessible on googles cached facility. I had it on this blog but there was no posting date. I had a version on Bukisa but I had put it on there after it was put on the thief's blog.

Fortunately, I had also submitted the article to Go Articles back in August 2009 and it was still on there and dated.

However, what could I have done to clear my name if there was no posting date on the stolen version?

Knowing how to use SEO (search engine optimisation) to get web traffic to your articles or website is vital. Achieving a page one ranking on search engines such as Google will vastly increase the number of visitors to your articles or web pages.

Google is the number one search engine on the internet, so mastering your SEO techniques to get a high ranking on Google is very important if you want to increase the traffic to your articles or website.

What is SEO ? (Search Engine Optimisation)

Highlighting some of your keywords can also be a useful SEO tool because Google will also assume that the words which you choose to highlight in an article are important to your subject matter. However it is important not to overdo things. Too many keywords and your ranking will suffer (not to mention, your article's construction and flow will suffer too). Google does not like web pages that are stuffed full of keywords.
You must strike a good balance with your keywords. You need to demonstrate what your article is about, but also that it contains useful content on the subject, which is what your readers are looking for.

Keywords in Titles
Another important way to utilise your keywords for search engine optimisation is to use them in your titles. You are far more likely to achieve a page 1 Google ranking if your keywords are in your article title and in subtitles within the article. You are reinforcing to the search engines what your article's subject matter is. Again don't overdo it. Don't create titles that are not relevant, just for the sake of creating titles.

Content is SEO King
The size and therefore perceived importance of your website or your article publishing website is also key to reaching Google page 1 ranking. Google loves a content rich website, but especially loves a website which continually adds fresh content. If you are writing for an article submission website it is therefore important to choose one that generally ranks well with Google. This will give your articles a "leg up" and so long as you use good SEO techniques within your articles you will have an excellent chance of achieving Google page 1 ranking.

Getting your articles ranked highly in this way is relatively easy if you are on the right website.

Getting your own website a page 1 ranking will take more time and effort but it is achievable with good SEOtechniques. If you are trying to get page one ranking for your own website then you will need to create several pages within it, all keyword rich, to convince Google that your site is a leading authority on your subject. Remember to have all the pages link to each other also.

Add fresh content regularly to keep the search engines interested in your site and write relevant articles on article submission sites that allow you to include a link back to your site. Your site will gradually creep up the search engine rankings and your traffic will flow readily.

The Value of a Hot Topic.
In order to be successful at making money by writing articles to either submit to article directory websites or show on your blog then one great tip is to write about a topic that is popular at the present time.
A hot topic. This is especially useful when writing articles for an article website like Bukisa.com that pays you for the number of page views your article draws.

This tip was given to me by a fellow article writer recently and boy has it proved to be a great tip.
My previous articles were only getting double figure page views but the two that I submitted, following this advice my page views shot up very quickly indeed.

Finding a Hot Topic for Successful Article Writing; Make Money by Writing
There are two very simple ways to find a hot topic;
Firstly - Watch the news. Is there a main event going on that you can write an article about? It could be something about a major sports event or a famous celebrity.
Secondly - Find out what people are searching for online. To do this go to Google Trends. There Google lists all the top searches. It is updated regularly so it is always a great guide. Similarly check out Yahoo Buzz.

Once you have your topic remember it must be in your own words and don't forget to add the keywords. Put the keywords in the title, the subtitle, the first sentence and scattered around your article. If possible try to include the keywords in the last sentence too. This will ensure that when people search those keywords they are more likely to find your article.

Writing about hot topics is also a good way of getting traffic to your site but try to stick to hot topics relevant to your blog otherwise such traffic is unlikely to be interested in reading the rest of your blog or returning to it. Maximize your earning potential by being proactive with your article marketing and really make money by writing articles online.

If you really want to make money by writing articles then it is important that you get the most out of your articles.
If, like me, you spend a lot of time writing articles to make money online, then you want to make sure that your articles are achieving their maximum potential.
You could write thousands of perfect articles, informative, beautifully presented, keyword optimized, with irresistible titles that draw in the masses, receive lot's of complimentary comments and get the top ratings, yet still not manage to earn a single penny from your article writing. You have done absolutely everything right but somehow fell at the final hurdle.
When writing articles to be submitted to article websites, sign up to several in order to see which are the best places to display your work. Experiment by moving your articles around. If you have some articles which are earning you nothing then try deleting them and submitting them to another site instead. Consider how you make money from each site. - Is it from associated ads or do you earn from page views? Where are your articles more successful?
I have had articles on ArticleIncome.com, which are clearly being read, receiving over 100 views in less than a week, but because that website only pays me for clicks on associated ads, my articles have earned nothing. Not a single bean! The only winner in that situation is the website's owners who are getting free fresh content from me, driving up their rankings and website traffic. If the same articles had been placed on a site that pays for the number of page views my articles had generated, such as Associated Content, I would have received $1.50 for every 1000 page views. Whilst that might not sound like a lot, so long as your articles are of good quality they will be given longevity on the site and will continue to earn over time. Once you have built up a large portfolio of articles they will all be producing a little trickle simultaneously so your earnings will grow. If you are a US citizen you can also earn from upfront payments for many articles with Associated Content - As I am in the UK I, unfortunately can not (tax reasons).
I have removed my articles from Article income and have started submitting them to Associated Content. The first article published has earned a few cents after a couple of days.
If you have your own website or blog, consider also how much juice your article submission sites are giving you in traffic for your site or search engine optimization. Can you put links to your own website in your articles and if so are they "do-follow" or "no-follow"? A no-follow link will lead anyone clicking on it to your website but it won't be followed by search engine robots or spiders and therefore is of no value for increasing your website's rankings. If your articles aren't making hard cash on one website, you may still be happy to leave it there if it is earning by way of backlinks to your site. Associated Content allow all your links, just limiting you to 4 per article, which I think is reasonable. Article Income do not allow links at all. I therefore now give that site the thumbs down.

Update: Associated content now only pay page view bonuses to US citizens. Non US residents will not be paid ANYTHING unless they are a featured writer.

Remember once you have submitted your articles, do not neglect them. They are still your articles to do with as you please. (So long as you haven't accepted upfront payments, of course). Move them around for maximum earning potential. If a site isn't working for you, try another - there are plenty out there to choose from.
So get your articles working for you. That is how to really make money from writing articles online.

One of the most widely used methods of making money by writing online is writing articles. But which articles prove to be the most popular?

Well there is a very simple rule. No matter if you are writing about fly fishing or chicken curry, if you want your article to be successful in attracting readers, which of course you do if you are planning on making money by writing, then the best thing to do is give people information. -and TELL them that is what you are doing. Articles with titles such as " How to be successful with fly-fishing" or "Tips for Making A Perfect Chicken Curry" will always bring in the readers. We are suckers for it! The two most powerful tags in the English language "Tips" and "How to".

Of course, once you have attracted your readers you had better damn well deliver on your promise or you will soon get a poor reputation. Remember your readers can rate or comment on your article and these comments and high ratings will give your article more impetus. Also if a reader likes your article they can link to it on their own site or retweet it etc. And if people like one of your articles they will most likely want to read your others. This in turn will bring them flocking to your website for your pearls of wisdom. (Remember you added that link in your article to your website didn't you?) Ultimately that is the most important aim - bringing traffic to your own website. This is how you will sell your products, or make money from associated ads.

SEO Get traffic To Your Site Using Backlinks

If you want to make money by writing on your own website or blog then getting traffic to your site is extremely important. To do this you need to get your site noticed and highly ranked by search engines. This is what is known as Search Engine Optimization or SEO. There are several factors involved in SEO but here we will discuss backlinks.
Backlinks
A backlink is simply a link to your site placed on another site. Generally speaking, your website will be considered more important by search engines if there are lots of other websites pointing to it. The more important they think you are in your niche, the higher ranking you will get. Ranking = traffic = money.
Relevance
Only put backlinks to your site on other sites that have a similar or relevant content to your site. Previously, it was purely about the quantity of links but these days search engines like google can punish you for having irrelevant links and will downgrade your site and rank it lower. So if your site is all about how to make money by writing online there is no value in having links from sites about caravan holidays or gardening. Put comments on blogs about the same topic as your site and add a link back to your site in your comment. Write some articles about your topic and submit them to an article site with a lot of clout that will allow you to put links in.
Direction
Having other websites linking to your website is far more beneficial than having your site pointing them. You will also be penilised if you are pointing at each other. This used to be a good thing but the huge growth in reciprical link websites exploiting that fact led search engine boffins thinking again. It is thought though, that there is no harm in having a reasonable number of links from your site to other relevant ones because this reinforces your content niche, but do try to have as many relevant sites as possible linking to your site only.
Nofollow
Watch out for websites which allow you to place a link but have a nofollow attribute attached to it. Whilst a link that is nofollow will still get people to your website, should they click on it, it won't be followed by any search engine crawling the original site. That means, as far as SEO is concerned, the link is of no value to you whatsoever. So, if you are writing articles for another website in order to make money by writing online with the hope of adding a backlink in the text, it is wise to check it isn't nofollow. To check whether a link is nofollow or not, you can simply right click on a blank part of the page and click "view source". This will show you the html code for that webpage. Scroll down to find your link and see if it states "nofollow".
Associated content was one of the article submission sites I signed up for to make money writing online articles. They pay $1.50 for every 1000 page views you generate from your articles. (Nb Now US residents only). They will allow you to add links to your articles but, it is worth noting, that if you add links using their add-link tab on the article submission box, it will result in a no follow link.
However, it is possible to add a link manually in order to avoid this. Once you have pasted your article into the text body box just click on the "source" button at the top of the box. This will show your article in html code. Just scroll to the part of your article you wish to add your link and type in the code. You will get the option to preview your article so you can check it works correctly. In any case, you should always view your article when published and check that the links works. You always have the opportunity of editing all your articles after they are published.
Link code Adding a simple link is very straightforward. Here I will show you how to add a link.

to do this I would type the following code but substituting * with the letter a and removing the 8 (I had to make these changes so you could see the code!!

Whilst it is important that you write about what you know and can be informative on, it is vital when writing articles to make money that your subject matter has a market. If no one is interested in reading your article in the first place you won't make any money.

Put some thought into choosing your title. Once you have written and edited your article it is most important to give it the best possible title. But most important of all it - INCLUDE THOSE KEYWORDS. 6. Fresh Content
Never copy and paste from other sites. As well as potential copyright problems, search engines will mark you down for identical content. If you want to submit the same article to different sites then rewrite it. Add some different content and change the words. That way your articles will receive maximum exposure from search engines and you will be more likely to make money from writing your articles.
7. Use Backlinks
If you have a website or blog that you want to get traffic to then when ever possible you should try to put a link on other sites back to your own. Only use sites that are in a similar category to your own - relevance is key. If your site is about making money by writing don't work too hard getting links from fishing sites! It is also important that the links are only one way, that is to say, don't have a link on your own site that links to the sites where you have placed your links. Not all article sites let you put a link in your articles but many do. Although beware of sites using "no follow" linking. Although people clicking on a no follow link will be directed to your site, search engines crawling the site won't follow the link to your site. Another way of acheiving backlinks is to comment on blogs that have similar content to your site. You will usually have the opportunity to attach your own URL when commenting.

About a month after setting up this blog I moved it to this, more appropriate web address. I discovered it was advantageous to have keywords in your web address.
It's simple but it makes sense.

The title is now relevant to what my blog is all about at http://www.makemoneybywriting.blogspot.com/ so, in theory it is more likely to draw traffic. So long as the website content is also keyword rich then having your keywords in your URL will make your pages more attractive to search engines. Your website will get a higher ranking in search engines, such as google and more potential visitors will see the link to your website.

Remember - traffic = make money by writing!

Marketing Your Blog - Networking

In order to generate some interest in your own blog or website you need to get yourself noticed on other sites. This will hopefully generate interest and people will follow a link to your site. This is called networking. You need to create a strong network of links back to your own website is you are to make money by writing.
You can become a poster on forums, place comments on other sites as well as writing and submitting articles on article websites. Obviously make sure you are allowed to post a link back to your own website or you will be wasting your time!
The more articles you have on other sites, the more you will make a name for yourself and create interest. But make sure what you post elsewhere is of good quality! If people are impressed with your articles, they are more likely to be interested in what else you have to say and will follow the links back to your site.

However, if they think your articles are rubbish the will automatically assume that your website will be too and won't come to visit.

Make Money by writing articles for websites Using Google Adsense

Write Articles for websites and Earn with Adsense.
Once your google adsense account has been approved you will be given an adsense account number that you can use on other participating sites that you can write articles for. Such sites display your submitted articles on their site and relevant ads are displayed next to them. If someone then uses the links to these ads you will make money from them. That's the idea anyway.
One site I have signed up with that worked this way was ArticleIncome.com. Members can write articles on a variety of subjects and they publish them on one of their partner sites that the subject is relevant too. For example http://www.sportsarticles.com/ , http://www.shopperarticles.com/ , http://www.articlepaw.com/ , http://www.contentconnection.com/ , http://www.articlegrow.com/ and http://www.articlemash.com/ to name just a few.
Time will tell if it is an effective way of generating any income or not. I will now have to set about writing some articles for them.

Update : I only continued with this method for a few weeks as it was not very successful. You see although my articles were very popular and received lots of hits, the readers did not click on the ads so I did not earn.

I moved my articles to Associated content which paid it's members for page views. This was the only form of payment I could get as I was outside the USA. It paid a steady trickle and as my portfolio of articles was increasing so to was my income.
However, after a great deal of time and effort put in to my work, Associated Content decided to pull the plug on all it's non US members citing updated US tax laws as the reason. There was no warning from AC -well 2 days!- and I don't think they were very fair about it to their members. Many of my articles had become very popular and were highly ranked in their subject on google. Although I could move my articles to another website, this meant that their google ranking suffered. All the links people had put to my articles became useless overnight.
I would suggest that if you are in the US that AC should be a site you should consider to write for. They will pay you up front fees as well as page view bonuses, but be careful not to put all your eggs in one basket as AC proved themselves to not care about their members.
If you are not in the US then AC are a waste of time, in my view. You won't get ANY payments for your work unless you can become a featured contributor.

Google adsense
Ok so I have my blog up and running and I have created a Google adsense account and have got some ads organised for my blog as well. So far so good.
Again it was all dead easy to do. Google Adsense works by paying you a fee for the number of clicks your website or blog generates clicks to the ads. The ads themselves will be relevant to your blog's content. It works by crawling your website and finding your keywords - That is words that are mentioned frequently on your site. So, for example, if your site was all about fishing it would pick up a lot of fishing related words and phrases and automatically place fishing related ads on your site. - So perhaps I should stick to referring to making money online from writing before I get the wrong ads on here!!
To set up an adsense account just go to www.google.com/adsense.

(Update If you have a blog then I recommend adding google adsense. Now let me be honest I have only made pennies from this. It's been no cash cow. You see in order for it to be a useful tool in making money by writing then you need your blog or website to be attracting a lot of visitors who then click on the ads. But the way I see it is it does no harm to have it. So long as you set it up correctly it provides your visitors with an additional tool in finding products and information that compliments your own, and if you earn a few pence too then all is good.)

Where do You Begin to make money from writing?

Day One.....

Things to do today...... hmm well starting a blog wasn't at the top of the list, in fact it wasn't even on the list at all. I've always wanted to be a writer and "they" say that it's possible to earn money from writing on the internet these days so I am setting out on a project to find out if "they" are right.
Where does one begin?
Google it, they say. (there "they" are again).
1. Start a blog. Ok. So what exactly is a blog? How do I start one? So far as I can see it's dumping your wittering on onto some poor unsuspecting public. But where will these "public" come from? And why would they be interested in my blog? I've so much to learn!
Well I've decided to make a real effort over the next three months to make some money out of writing. After three months is up I will either have proved or disproved what "they" say. Anyone can make money from writing. I have elected to go with the positive approach and go forth with the utmost optimism. Of course its possible to earn money from my writing, indeed it will be easy.

Setting up a blog was, in fact, very easy - an idiot could do it - no really! Just go to www.blogger.com and set up an account - Don't worry it's free. (Update - With hindsight, setting up a blog did prove a useful asset in my quest to make money by writing. Think of it as your personal website. A place to put links to all your work, past, present and future. It is your trading post. A place to advertise yourself and your wares all in the same place. I started with blogger.com and I am still with them. I thoroughly reccomend them if you want somewhere free to site your blog/website.)

I'm going to begin by looking into the possibility of earning cash from associated ads. That is to say, writing articles to be published on websites which run associated ads alongside the articles, paying the author a commission for any sales generated. For example if I write about cats can I help someone somewhere sell cat food? They say anyone can make money writing online. Is that right? In August 2009 I set out on a quest to find out. With this blog you can follow my progress, pick up tips along the way and learn from my mistakes.
What is the truth about making money from blogging? Can you make any money writing articles? Which sites offer the best advice and which are just trying to sell you something?

I am a complete beginner setting out on a very steep learning curve. By the end of it I hope to have found the answers and I will share them with you. So come along for the ride and lets make lots of money from writing online.
